CanAdventure Education is a leading-edge wilderness adventure program that engages young people in education, cultural awareness, skill development, and personal growth. The company was founded to promote wilderness adventure as an ideal vehicle for recreation, learning and personal growth among young people. Operating out of a base camp in Sayward, BC (45 minutes north of Campbell River), CanAdventure Education runs programs for youth aged 13-21, including specialized programming for struggling teens and aspiring eco-tourism leaders. Programs include backpacking and kayaking expeditions to central and northern Vancouver Island’s most inspiring destinations, including Strathcona Park, Nootka Island, Cape Scott, Juan de Fuca Trail, Johnstone Strait, and the Gulf Islands.
Wilderness Instructors lead their respective groups 24hrs/day while in base camp and on wilderness expeditions. Basic duties include, but are not limited to:
• Adhering to, promoting, and enforcing CanAdventure Education’s Policies and Procedures, as published in the Policies and Procedures Manual;
• Planning daily activities within a pre-determined camp calendar;
• Leading or overseeing team-building, skill development, personal growth, and educational activities;
• Providing strong, confident leadership in advance of and during expeditions;
• Contributing to general base camp operations;
• Completing reports and paperwork; and
• Contributing to the ongoing promotion and development of CanAdventure Education’s business interests.
Required minimum training, certifications, and documentation include:
• Standard First Aid or equivalent course, including CPR-C,
• Bronze Medallion water rescue or equivalent course,
• Clean criminal record check and driving record.
Wilderness Instructors are responsible for maintaining current all certifications and for completing regular staff training sessions as dictated by CanAdventure Education management. They are further encouraged to pursue ongoing industry-related professional development.
There are five levels of Wilderness Instructor positions at CanAdventure Education, with the following pay rates and additional certifications and responsibilities:

5 Level 4 required certs plus:
Lifesaving or First Aid Instructor
SKGABC guide instructor**
Counselling-related certs Camp admin & Senior Instructor duties
Staff & LIT training and certification $150/day*
* Pay rates are subject to $15/day camp costs for food, telephone, long distance, internet, laundry
