Marine/Watershed Educator Job Description: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: working with students in their classroom to design a marine research project, sampling plan and itinerary; and/or working with “Sound and Source” schools to design and execute watershed-based research projects. During programs aboard the sailing vessel, the Marine Educators supervise students who are deploying science equipment, analyzing data, operating the ship, camping, and cooking. In the evenings, educators may assist in organizing free time activities for student participants. Other duties may include program development, food and supply packing, office and logistical projects and general maintenance of equipment. Marine Educators work with one other educator and several other staff while on board, and 1-2 other educators while in the classroom. Qualifications: BA/BS in science and/or education in marine or watershed science, demonstrated teaching ability and current first aid/CPR. Experience working with 10-16 year olds is highly desirable. The ability to work well both individually and as a team member. Teaching certification, advanced first aid, and boating skills desirable. Sufficient physical strength and agility to carry out the essential duties of the position, including participating in boat based activities, lifting and carrying gear up to 50 pounds, as well as an ability to be an effective team member in the risk management strategies of the organization. . Students are the key decision makers in every aspect of the program, from choosing a study project to developing a hypothesis, determining a sampling plan, and operating the boat.
