THIS IS FULL TIME SEASONAL POSITION POSITION SUMMARY: Provide primary leadership for the delivery of the onboard programming. Manage onboard guest programming by creating, implementing and managing programs. Supervise an Exploration Guide who has knowledge in areas dealing with science and natural history of the destination and area covered. Manage timing of all onboard programming including guest speakers. Inspires guests and helps them understand and appreciate what they are experiencing. Take ownership on delivering an unforgettable vacation experience to our guests through knowledge and customer service. The EL is well versed on the knowledge of the destination including, history, culture and natural surroundings. Manages and is responsible for making onboard sales goals of all sales programs onboard, including Quyana and ShoreEx. Manages ship to shore transfers of passengers in a clear and concise manner. Manage, and when necessary, escorts passengers on included shore excursions. Builds outstanding working relationship with crew, vendors and shore offices. As an officer and a part of the vessel management team, the EL is a consummate professional who can handle pressure with grace, poise and logic. Can work independently and as a team with outstanding decision making abilities. Polished social skills and maturity to communicate clearly, positively and calmly under stressful conditions to the Captain, crew and passengers. The EL is expected to address and then report to the Captain any concerns, needs, problems, and desires the guests may have as the EL is the person guests communicate with first. This would include negotiating with the Captain to agree on specific vessel timings and learn about sea conditions, and special circumstance that will affect the passenger experience. Exploration Leaders are expected to be a role model for all Cruise West policies and procedures. MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY INCLUDE: · Manage guest programming onboard the vessel. Programming includes scheduling, timing and content of educational programs, entertainment, Quyana, ShoreEx, route talk, disembarkation and any guest speakers. Scheduling and manage the Exploration Guide. Negotiate and collaborate with other onboard management to solve all onboard issues. Communicate with the Bridge and Hotel Dept. regarding routing and timing of site seeing, meals, docking and other excursions. · Works directly with ShoreEx vendors to ensure compliance and expectations. Builds a solid working relationship with vendors. Proactively resolves issues directly with vendors. · Well versed on Cruise West history and is able communicate to answer guests with ease and confidence. Will frequently interact as a Cruise West representative to guests during meals and social time to answer their questions. Accountable for meeting and exceeding Quyana and ShoreEx goals. Upholding Cruise West standards and policy, including meeting and/or exceeding guests expectations as directed via comment cards. Quality control: The Exploration Leader must ensure that vendor delivered tours meet Cruise West’s standards of safety and service excellence. Proactively work with Seattle personnel to improve the Cruise West product & resolve issues. Maintains the Technical Itinerary, making changes as necessary and communicating changes to the Seattle office. Manages all administrative tasks assigned to EG and ensures timely delivery to the Seattle office. QUALIFICATIONS: Polished professional and proven leadership skills. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills. Maturity and social skills to interact with Cruise West guests who tend to be highly educated and destination savvy. Outstanding customer service mentality and practice. Undergraduate or higher degree desired or equivalent experience preferred. Prior cruise or travel industry experience strongly preferred. Interpersonal skills require the ability to regularly deal with situations where strong opposing views are encountered and satisfactory resolution of issues must be achieved. Ability to make smart decisions quickly and independently. Responsible for training and guiding others and/or reviewing their work. Supervisory capacity to manage highly educated and/or specialized individuals. WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties and responsibilities are generally performed in a Marine Operations setting, primarily onboard a vessel. Must be physically able to work a typical 12- hour workday of about 10-14 hours per day, seven days a week, for 6 weeks at a time. On any given day hours could be more or less. The 6-week work period is the normal, but not necessarily fixed onboard schedule, and it is followed by a 2 to 3 week period off the vessel. Environmental conditions generally include ambient inside temperature, ambient inside lighting, ambient to loud noise levels, all weather conditions, occasional use of required protective clothing and an irregular work schedule. Mobility demands generally include occasional sitting and occasional standing. Combination activities generally include handling of chemicals/chemical compounds such as cleaning agents. Sensory demands generally involve a computer terminal; telephone operation, microphone and PA systems. Physical demands generally include frequent bending, reaching, twisting, kneeling, pulling/pushing, grasping, and the ability to climb a 7-foot vertical ladder and fit through a 28-inch wide hatch. Physical demands also include individual handling of one to several different sized objects totaling up to 50 pounds in weight. Handling includes: the dynamic and momentary strenuous lifting and lowering of objects between the ground/deck level and a height of about 4 to 6 feet; continuously repeating these movements about once per minute continuously for up to 20 minutes; repetitive turning and twisting of the body while holding these objects, and passing or receiving them between people as frequently as every 10 seconds; and repeatedly carrying objects of similar weight a distance of up to 100 feet every one to two minutes for as long as 20 minutes without stopping.
