Position Description: The Outdoor Education Specialist will provide an educational experience in learning about nature and environmental preservation during the SEED program. The primary role of the Outdoor Education Specialist will be to organize and coordinate the activities for outdoor education. The outdoor education program requires an individual that has extensive experience and knowledge of the eco-environment. The program activities must follow all program policies and procedures aligned with the American Camp Association (ACA) standards. This role will require an independent thinker and experienced manager that understands the dynamics of working with inner-city/ urban youth as well as how to work in a residential camp program. This position requires an individual with a willingness to learn from and make use of their skills, character and personality to connect with the participants and provide support. The Outdoor Education Specialist must have a commitment to the value and benefits of outdoor experiential education in meeting young girls’ social and physical developmental needs. The Outdoor Education Specialist will report to the Program Director. Minimal Qualifications: • Knowledge and expertise in outdoor education and environmental preservation. • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. • Critical thinking and problem solving skills. • Be able to react in a crisis situation with a clear mind. • Ability to supervise, coordinate, and participate in physical activities. • Able to work with people from diverse backgrounds. • Emotional maturity, good moral character and integrity. • Experience working with children, and high school and college students. • 2 years experience working in a residential program setting. • Desire to work and live in the outdoors for 2 months during the summer. • Able to walk one mile over rough terrain in under 30 minutes without assistance. • Able to lift a 14”x18”x36” piece of luggage weighing 40 pounds to a height of 48”. • Bachelors degree, course work or experience in environmental education, outdoor education, and/or equivalent training experience. General Responsibilities: • Conduct 60-90 minute sessions daily. • Assist with summer staff orientation and training, and where ever needed to ensure a smooth operating program. • Set up rules for safety in your program areas, as well as safety procedures. • Check all equipment throughout the summer for any defects. • Teach the program participants insect and plant identification. • Assume responsibility for the set-up and close-down of the assigned program areas. • Work with other Activity Specialists to deliver all-camp and special event day activities. • Rotate evening duty responsibility with the other administrative staff. • Organize activities for staff when possible to encourage healthy and productive activities for staff that boost morale and positive work ethic. • Submit a final report and competed inventories as assigned at the end of the summer. • Follow all policies as provided in the Girls Quest Employee Handbook and the American Camp Association. • Assume additional responsibilities as skills, interests, time and circumstances dictate, as determined by and with the Camp Director.
