Ferrum College seeks an Adventure Programmer to assist with the implementation of the Ferrum Outdoors program which provides outdoor experiences for students, faculty and staff of the Ferrum College Community.
Duties:
On campus activities
-schedule weekly outdoor programs utilizing the resources on campus (hike/bike on trails, sessions at bouldering wall, etc)
-staff weekly activities with student leaders
-assist coordinator in training student leaders for safe implementation of programs
Weekend/evening excursions
-schedule day-long outdoor programs (at least two weekends per month)
-staff excursions with student leaders; Adventure Programmer must attend all trips
-assist coordinator in training student leaders for safe implementation of programs
-coordinate transportation and meals for trips
Extended excursions
-schedule extended outdoor programs during fall and spring breaks
-staff excursions with student leaders; Adventure Programmer must attend all trips
-train student leaders and faculty/staff leaders in safe implementation of programs
-coordinate transportation and meals for trips
Maintenance of on-campus resources
-oversee the maintenance of all existing trails and the development of new trails
-coordinate all trail work with volunteer groups etc
-oversee maintenance of the bouldering wall
-oversee equipment check out and maintenance
-oversee maintenance and improvements to disc golf course
Administrative responsibilities
-supervise up to six work study students
-develop cost estimates for all programs
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor of Science in Recreation Leadership; Parks, Recreation & Tourism; Adventure Education or similar
• Wilderness First Aid and complimentary CPR certifications
• Demonstrated technical abilities in rock climbing, canoeing, sea kayaking, backpacking, caving, navigation/orienteering, etc.
• Clean driving record (0 or positive points on record)
• Comfortable with hand tools needed for trial building and maintence as well as repair of outdoor equipment
Prefer certifications in one or more of the following:
a. American Mountain Guides Association, Top Rope Site Manager
b. American Canoe Association, Canoe Instructor
c. Wilderness Education Association, Outdoor Leader Certification
d. Wilderness First Responder and CPR for professional rescuer certifications.
Successful candidate will have a positive disposition, be a self-starter, and be able to connect with student participants. In addition the candidate will have a firm working knowledge of experiential education processes and be able to appropriately debrief experiences to enhance learning.
