Trekkers is a non-profit, outdoor-based mentoring program that connects caring adults with young people through expeditionary learning, community service and adventure-based education. With community adult volunteers working throughout the year, Trekkers provides a myriad of educational, experiential, and cross-cultural opportunities for young people, with an emphasis on relationship building and an appreciation of the earth as "educator". Our goal is to be a part of students’ lives from grade to grade and year to year. Trekkers follows students as they "graduate" from one program into the next along a six year journey that starts when they are in 7th grade and continues until they graduate. Position Title: Program Coordinator Immediate Supervisor: Meredith Lynt, Program Director Host Site Location: Tenants Harbor, Maine Term of Service: 1700 Hour Position - September 24, 2010 to August 25, 2011 Qualifications: •Self motivated with a high degree of flexibility •Ability to clearly and concisely communicate orally and in writing •Excellent organizational skills •Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred •Dedication to the mission of AmeriCorps Community Resource Corps •Effective public speaker •Ability to use various types of technology (i.e. word processing, Microsoft Office Suite, GoToMeeting, on-line reporting system) Essential Functions: •Develop, implement and strengthen volunteer programs •Coordinate and facilitate meetings •Participate in staff meetings •Attend required weekly meetings with supervisor •Coordinate projects with team members •Personal transportation Site Specific Essential Functions: •Implement and improve our volunteer management system •Recruit and coordinate volunteers for Trekkers Peer Mentoring program and Big Trek Little Trek •Assist program director with managing students and volunteers for all of our 6 core expeditions •Assist program director with managing students and volunteers for Photo Treks and Apprentice Treks •Weekend service trips and day long excursions •Responsible for recruitment of both student participants and assisting the management of volunteers for our leadership program and our Adventure Treks programming •Act as a positive role model for youth Work Schedule/Working Conditions: Trekkers maintains regular office hours. The expeditionary nature of our work with young people and our philosophy of relationship building does require weekend, holiday, and overnight hours as well. Fast paced environment with various deadlines and multiple internal and external stakeholders. Work is performed in an office setting using computer, copier, fax, and general office equipment. Trekkers offers a dynamic work environment where there are long stretches in the office and long stretches on outdoor expeditions; thus our AmeriCorps member must be as comfortable in an office environment as they are on outdoor-based expeditions. Working Relationships/Support: Member will be provided support by the direct Supervisor and Host Site Organization as well as the AmeriCorps Staff. Member will receive a thorough on-site and AmeriCorps Orientation, Host Site specific training and training on a variety of topics related to work within a nonprofit setting. Various reporting will be required of the member throughout the term by the AmeriCorps Staff regarding member performance, completion of goals, training accomplishments, and continuous improvement of our program. Site Benefits: Expeditions AmeriCorps Member Benefits: All AmeriCorps positions have a living allowance of $11,800 evenly divided over the course of their 11 month term, health insurance coverage from the first day of service to the last day of the last month of their term, and a $5,350 education award (upon completion) to apply to previous federal student loans or continuing education costs at a Title IV Institution. Applicable student loans can be put in forbearance and any interest accrued during the term will be paid by AmeriCorps. Members are covered under health insurance and workers compensation. Eligible members can also apply for child care reimbursement. Mileage to AmeriCorps Sponsored Training events will be reimbursed to members. The local host site will reimburse mileage expenses associated with project related travel at the rate which they reimburse their staff. Members also receive significant professional and personal development training.
